What is Karma?

Karma is a mysterious subject matter. In general karma is understood to be action. Lord Krishna explains in Bhagavad-gita, “Action pertaining to the development of these material bodies is called karma, or fruitive activities.” Every action performed by is subjected to ‘law of karma’. What is that law of karma?

1. Bad things don’t happen to good people

The first principle of karma is – as you sow, so shall you reap. No reaction comes without our havig performed the action. If we are suffering then surely we have done wrong. Whether we are suffering due to a minor headache or a terrible affliction like Tsunami, we are responsible through our actions. It is not wise to blame others, as they act only as instruments in giving us the results.

2. Our karma doesn’t belong to this life alone

Often people wonder that when they haven’t done anything wrong in this life then why are they suffering. The answer is that everything that we enjoy or suffer in this life is not the result of this life’s actions alone. It takes different intervals for different actions to fructify. If we put finger in fire, it immediately burns but it takes few hours to digest the food and get energized. Similarly some actions fructify in this life while others fructify in the next.

3. Pious and sinful actions are decided by Shastra.

Often people think sin to be ‘doing wrong’ and wrong means what they feel wrong. But the laws of karma are established by God, so our opinions don’t hold good. Just like the laws of this country are given in Indian Penal Code and whatever it prohibits is called crime. Similarly the governing laws of this universe are given in the scriptures and whatever they prohibit are called sin. Pious action and sin cannot be decided by just as the state law is not decided by us but by the authorities. Therefore to understand the principles of pious and sinful actions, we must refer the scriptures.

4. Ignorance of law is no excuse

If a motorist doesn’t halt at red signal then he will surely be fined. If he argues that he wasn’t aware of the law, will the police spare him? No. It’s the duty of driver to learn traffic laws. Ignorance of law cannot be an excuse. Similarly, being the denizen of this creation, it is our responsibility to learn the laws of creation. This is the prime duty of human life. We must learn right and wrong from the scriptures, and then only we can expect independence and happiness.

5. Only devotional service can give liberation

Whether good or bad, one must suffer the reactions of every action. For that one must be ready to take repeated births. In life after life we perform countless actions and thus, the cycle of karma goes on endlessly. Lord Krishna reveals in the Gita secret to breaking out of this cycle, which is to engage in devotional service and surrender unto Him. He promises to deliver us from all our sins. Surrender means to obey His instruction. His top most instruction is to chant His holy name.
