As described in the sacred text Gaura-ganoddesha-dipika, Srimati Jahnava Devi is an expansion of Revati Devi, the eternal consort of Lord Balarama. Along with her elder sister Vasudha, she descended in the pastimes of Lord Chaitanya as the beloved wives of Lord Nityananda.
Some Vaishnava authorities also identify her as an incarnation of Ananga Manjari, the younger sister of Srimati Radharani. Thus, Jahnava Devi embodies the highest spiritual energy and represents the divine love of Vraja.
Birth and Family Background
Jahnava Devi appeared as the daughter of the noble and highly respected Srila Suryadas Sarakhela, a wealthy and influential devotee who served as an accountant for the king of Gauda. Because of his important position, he was given the title “Sarakhela”.
She was born in the sacred village of Shaligrama, near Navadvipa. Her father was deeply devoted to Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda, and her entire family was filled with devotion.

The Divine Dream of Suryadas
When Jahnava and Vasudha reached marriageable age, their father Suryadas became concerned about finding a suitable husband. One night, he had a divine dream in which he saw Lord Nityananda Prabhu in His original form as Balarama, shining with divine effulgence.
In that dream, his two daughters appeared beside the Lord as Revati and Varuni. Overwhelmed with joy, Suryadas understood that his daughters were meant to be offered to Nityananda Prabhu.
Upon waking, he felt intense longing and declared that he would find no peace unless he could offer his daughters to the Lord.
Jahnava Devi’s Divine Ecstasy
When discussions about the proposal began, an extraordinary event took place. Overwhelmed with divine love for Lord Nityananda, Jahnava Devi suddenly fell unconscious. Her body became still, and she appeared as if lifeless.
Doctors were called, but no one could understand her condition. It was then realized that this was not an ordinary illness but a manifestation of intense spiritual ecstasy.
