Three Diseases Caused By Time

According to Medical and Psychological Science a person can be afflicted with diseases from various causes like: dysfunction, infection, hereditary disorder, climate change, poor nutrition, prenatal damage, depression, substance abuse, psychological trauma etc. Srimad Bhagavatam informs us of one more cause of diseases i.e. Time. It also said that everyone in this world suffers from the three diseases caused by time: lamentation, illusion and fearfulness.

Every one of us laments for some action, incident or failure of the past. So time in the form of past causes a disease of lamentation in everyone.

Man, under the illusion of living forever, forgets that he has to leave everything after a small span of time. So he takes to the path of hard struggle and exploitation for unlimited accumulation of 3 basic needs: Food, clothing and shelter. Thus he never really enjoys his present time and remains anxious while struggling hard. In this way, time in the form of present causes a disease of illusion.

Time in the form of future causes a disease of fearfulness in everyone. When a man thinks of future he feels insecurities in relationships, marriage, job, health, privacy, reputation etc. Advancement of technology, especially in the field of social media and nuclear weapon, has created very high uncertainty of future, putting everyone into even more fearfulness.

As there are remedies for other diseases, there is remedy for the diseases caused by time too. This remedy is given in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.7.7 as follow: "bhaktir utpadyate pumsah shoka-moha-bhayapaha" - Devotional service to Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, at once extinguishes the fire of lamentation, illusion and fearfulness. People of whole world can study Srimad Bhagavatam and learn the science of devotional service to Lord Krishna. Thus become free from ever paining diseases: lamentation (of past), illusion (in present) and fearfulness (from future).
