Biography
Srila Prabhupada, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, was the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Born in Calcutta in 1896, he dedicated his life to sharing the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna and the path of bhakti-yoga.
In 1965, at the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada traveled from India to the United States with very little money and only a small number of books. Within a few years, he established temples, ashrams, farms, restaurants, and educational communities around the world.
Srila Prabhupada translated and explained important Vaishnava scriptures, including Bhagavad-gita As It Is and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Through his books, lectures, personal guidance, and tireless travels, he introduced Krishna consciousness to millions of people across the globe.
He established ISKCON in New York City in 1966 and inspired a worldwide movement centered on chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, studying Krishna's teachings, serving the Vaishnavas, honoring prasadam, and living a life of devotion.
Srila Prabhupada departed from this world in Vrindavan on November 14, 1977, leaving behind a lasting spiritual legacy through his books, disciples, temples, and teachings.
