Chanting in Tompkins Square Park
Srila Prabhupada introduced the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra to the public in New York City.
Srila Prabhupada regularly led congregational chanting in Tompkins Square Park in New York City. He would sit beneath a large elm tree, play the traditional mridanga drum, and lead devotees and visitors in chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.
The simple practice of chanting, accompanied by devotional music and dancing, attracted many people and became one of the early public expressions of the Krishna consciousness movement in America.
